1X Gives NEO 25-DoF Hands and Calls Them an API

If a humanoid is a computer that walks, 1X Technologies just published a better I/O layer. On July 9, 2026 the company unveiled new tendon-driven hands for its NEO home robot: 25 degrees of freedom, all force-controlled, and — in the company’s words — “an API to the physical world.”

The Specs That Matter

From the official NEO’s Hands post:

  • 25 DoF total22 fully actuated in fingers and palm, 3 at the wrist
  • 1X Tendon Drive with quasi-direct-drive ratios of roughly 5:1 to 15:1
  • Joints are force-controlled and fully backdrivable (“force transparency”)
  • IP68 sealing with food-safe materials so the robot can work at a sink and wash its hands
  • Peak numbers called out: distal flexion forces up to 45 N, wrist torque 17.75 Nm, positioning about ±0.2 mm
  • Tactile sensing for normal force, contact location, and shear (slip detection)
  • Production claim: capacity to build about 10,000 hands this year on an in-house line; hundreds already off the line

CEO Bernt Børnich said the goal was hands that match or surpass human capability “across every dimension that matters,” so models are limited by data, not by dumb claws.

What 1X Shows Them Doing

The company demo list reads like a household skill tree: LEGO builds, screws and coins, light bulbs, screwdrivers, grapes sorted by color, tea poured from a kettle, USB-C plugs, wine glasses, paper towels, even sign language. Whether every clip is fully autonomous is a fair question for any humanoid launch — 1X is clear that the hands are the hardware substrate for learning, not a magic trick by themselves.

The engineering argument is neat: high gear ratios make most robot hands write-only; low-ratio tendons let force flow back through the motors so every push is also a measurement.

A Human’s Take

Calling a hand an “API” is marketing — and also accurate. If NEO is going into kitchens, the boring magic is gentle force control, slip sensing, and a hand you can hose off. Hands at scale matter as much as the flashy grasp videos. Watch whether customer units keep the demo-day finesse after months of drawers, dishes, and dog toys.
