Travis Kalanick’s Atoms Raises $1.7B With a16z Leading

Travis Kalanick’s robotics company Atoms raised $1.7 billion in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz, TechCrunch reported July 22, 2026. Ben Horowitz will join the board. Bain Capital, Fifth Wall, and others participated — and so did Uber, reconnecting Kalanick with the company he founded and left under pressure in 2017.

## What Atoms Is

Atoms is described as a rebranded holding structure on top of Kalanick’s post-Uber work — including the Cloud Kitchens project — and the acquisition of Pronto, the heavy-industry automation company run by former Uber colleague Anthony Levandowski.

Kalanick has talked about a “wheelbase for robots” and expanding beyond Pronto’s vehicle work into areas like mining. TechCrunch notes he did not give a detailed product roadmap in the fundraise post.

On X, Kalanick framed the round as fuel to finish a “bits-to-atoms” arc from Uber through CloudKitchens to Atoms — digitizing and controlling the physical world with software. Horowitz posted that Atoms is about making people more productive in the physical world, comparing the ambition to what Uber did for transportation.

Why It’s on the Feed

This is industry with a capital I: huge check, famous founder, a16z on the board, Uber back in the cap table. It is not a $30 cleaning hour or a printable biped. It is a signal that physical AI and heavy automation still attract late-stage money even when the product story is broad.

A Human’s Take

$1.7B buys hiring, acquisitions, and runway — not proof a “wheelbase for robots” works. Pronto’s industrial roots are the only concrete hardware thread in the public write-ups. Watch what Atoms ships, not what it metaphors. For a fun robotics blog, this is the contrast piece: the capital weather report next to teams that already put a price on a kitchen clean.
