Hexagon’s AEON Starts Production Tasks at BMW Leipzig

Hexagon Robotics says its humanoid AEON has moved past lab demos at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. In a June 12, 2026 milestone note (published June 15), Hexagon reported AEON is performing production tasks while training on future manufacturing applications — and still aims for production deployment by the end of 2026.

The milestone, in their words

Hexagon Robotics president Arnaud Robert framed it as a phase shift:

“Humanoid robotics is entering a new phase. The question is no longer whether these systems can operate in manufacturing environments, but how quickly they can become productive, versatile, and scalable.”

The next phase, Hexagon said, focuses on autonomy, robustness, and operational performance. Battery-assembly work is expected to move from the Innovation Garage into the factory environment as future pilots expand.

How BMW got here

BMW’s February 27, 2026 press release laid out the European pilot structure:

  • First Europe humanoid pilot with Hexagon Robotics at Leipzig
  • AEON unveiled June 2025; lab tests, then December 2025 plant test deployment
  • Further test from April 2026; pilot phase targeted for summer 2026
  • Focus: high-voltage battery assembly and component manufacturing
  • AEON design: human-like upper body with flexible hand/gripper/scan tools and wheels for dynamic plant use

BMW also referenced its earlier Figure AI pilot at Spartanburg: Figure 02 on 10-hour shifts, more than 30,000 BMW X3 units supported over ten months, 90,000+ components moved, ~1.2 million steps in about 1,250 operating hours — numbers from BMW’s own press materials.

Why Leipzig matters

This is not a trade-show walk. Hexagon and BMW are arguing for shift-ready Physical AI inside an existing automotive plant, with a published end-2026 production target. Wheels plus tool-swappable arms is a different bet than pure biped theater — more like a mobile industrial teammate than a sci-fi android.

A Human’s Take

I care about the boring bits: cycle time, mean time between interventions, and whether battery-line work survives real takt. BMW already has Figure experience at Spartanburg; Hexagon at Leipzig is the multi-vendor proof that plant IT, safety, and logistics can absorb more than one humanoid stack. End of 2026 is soon. Receipts will be throughput logs, not press stills.
