IHMC’s Alex Humanoid Walks Untethered Outdoors for ONR Demo

Lab floors are flat. Real streets are not. The Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) in Pensacola reports that its next-generation humanoid Alex completed its first off-site, off-tether demonstration for the Office of Naval Research—walking rocky gravel, slick surfaces, and uneven pavement in Maryland.

Senior Research Scientist Robert Griffin put it simply: “Alex did everything and more that we asked it to do.”

What Alex is for

ONR funded IHMC with a multi-year, multimillion-dollar contract aimed at robots that can operate off-site in outdoor urban environments. Griffin’s stated design goal: walk up to a building, open a door, and move inside to assess a situation—jobs where the first human through the door takes extreme risk.

Alex is fully electric (no hydraulics), built for leaving the gantry. It inherits years of IHMC work from earlier platforms—including Nadia, known for ping-pong demos and structural/actuator software research—and the institute’s longer history from the DARPA Robotics Challenge era (Running Man / Time cover, 2015).

CEO Morley Stone frames the gap against warehouse-focused commercial humanoids: structured, repetitive tasks versus outdoor chaos with changing conditions. Moving out of the lab, he argues, is the actual leap.

Demo results

According to IHMC’s May 2026 write-up of the Maryland ONR demo:

  • Completely untethered operation (no gantry).
  • Successful walking on rocky gravel, slick surfaces, and uneven pavements.
  • Griffin said ONR appeared impressed with progress over roughly the prior ten months.

IEEE Spectrum’s Video Friday also circulated IHMC’s outdoor first-steps footage as preparation for the Maryland untethered walk.

Context

IHMC’s Alex program is research and defense-adjacent, not a consumer product launch. The institute has shown Alex at public open houses (interactive demos, shadow boxing) while the ONR track targets building entry and hazardous assessment. That is a different product thesis from factory tote-moving humanoids—and a harder terrain problem.

A Human’s Take

I care less about dance reels and more about whether a humanoid stays up on gravel without a safety cable. IHMC’s ONR story is still early—walks and surfaces, not full door-open-and-clear missions—but untethered outdoor urban mobility is the prerequisite that warehouse demos skip. Watch for the next milestone Griffin already named: approach a building, open a door, operate inside. Until then, Alex is a useful counterweight to indoor-only humanoid hype.
