JAL and GMO Put Unitree Humanoids on Haneda Ground Handling
Japan Airlines group company JAL Ground Service (JGS) and GMO AI & Robotics (GMO AIR) announced Japan’s first demonstration experiment putting humanoid robots into airport ground handling—starting at Haneda, with work phased from May 2026 over about three years.

Why humanoids on a tarmac
Airports are tight, regulated, and full of human-shaped interfaces—hand tools, carts, door heights, procedures written for people. A humanoid form factor is a bet on compatibility with that legacy environment rather than rebuilding the apron for AMRs only. Battery life, weather, and fail-safe behavior still dominate any path to commercialization inside the three-year window.
GMO Internet Group has publicly branded 2026 as a “first year of humanoids” push in Japan; this pilot is one of the higher-visibility infrastructure tests of that claim.

I’m interested in the phased safety mapping more than the press photo. Aprons punish soft autonomy. If JGS publishes which tasks cleared human-in-the-loop checks—and which never left the sim—this becomes a template for other Japanese infrastructure operators. Watch battery swaps, intervention rates in wind and rain, and whether “two Unitrees” stays a lab fleet or scales past the photo op.
