Mitsubishi Motors Targets 1,000 Humanoids a Month With Highlanders
Mitsubishi Motors is not waiting for someone else to figure out factory humanoids. With University of Tokyo spinout Highlanders, the automaker has set a public target: 1,000 AI-equipped bipedal robots a month by the end of 2027, while putting units on a Kyoto engine line to collect the data that actually matters.
That number comes from Kyodo reporting carried by The Mainichi and Kyodo News English — not a vague “scale ambition.” The companies also signed a formal MOU on July 9, 2026, covering joint development for Mitsubishi plants and mass production of Highlanders products at unused buildings on the Kyoto plant.
What the Deal Actually Says
Mitsubishi’s own newsroom is careful: this is an MOU to explore joint development and Kyoto production, with feasibility work aimed at starting production in early 2027. Highlanders, founded in May 2023, builds general-purpose humanoids and quadrupeds with domestically sourced parts and already runs a factory in Tokorozawa, Saitama.
Parallel tracks, if they hold:
- Use robots on Mitsubishi’s own floor — starting with an engine manufacturing line in Kyoto — to gather operational data for auto-specialized AI robots
- Build Highlanders machines using Mitsubishi’s mass-production engineering, quality, durability, and mechatronics stack
- Capital: Mitsubishi has already invested in Highlanders and says it plans more
Why Japan’s Autocomplete Matters
CEO Takao Kato told the Tokyo press conference that Japan is the “leadoff hitter” in mass-producing humanoids — a pointed contrast to U.S. and Chinese programs already in the news cycle. Highlanders CEO Hiroya Masuoka was blunter about the gap: he said Japan still lacks a company that can compete globally in “physical AI,” and the partnership is how they take a step.
Labor shortage is the domestic business case. Bipedal generalists are the bet that car-plant know-how transfers to robot BOM, line layout, and durability — the boring stuff that decides whether 1,000 units a month is a factory schedule or a slide deck.
A Human’s Take
I care less about the MOU language and more about the Kyoto engine-line pilot. If those machines stay on a real shift and the 2027 production start holds, this is one of the cleaner automaker–startup manufacturing stories in the beat: customer, factory, and builder in the same corporate orbit. Watch early-2027 capacity claims and whether “1,000 a month” survives first-article inspection — not the photo op.
