Nucleus Puts Supervised G1s on a German Floor and Bills by the Hour
Nucleus came out of stealth on August 5 with a claim that is easy to check and hard to fake: it put humanoid robots into a real German factory in under 90 days. The customer is unnamed. Interesting Engineering and Humanoids Daily both report it as one of Germany’s larger industrial manufacturers. Founder Melvin Schwarz frames the product as physical work billed by the hour, not a robot sale.
Deploy first, autonomy later
The team’s backgrounds, per the company site and launch coverage, include CERN, ESA, 1X, Foundation, NEURA, and Agile Robots. The hardware is not a new body. Interesting Engineering says Nucleus is running Unitree G1 platforms in black branded protective suits and spending its own engineering on software, rollout, and custom end effectors.
The three-step client path, repeated across IE and Humanoids Daily:
- Scan the plant and workstations in 3D.
- Simulate workflows and pick a robot configuration.
- Supervise remotely for the first three weeks, doing paid work while collecting training data.
Schwarz’s launch post: “We deployed humanoid robots into a real factory in under 90 days!” The company compares the data play to Tesla and Waymo collecting miles on real roads instead of waiting for a perfect simulator.
Custom fingertips, hourly invoice
Standard G1 hands were not enough. In one job, workers pulled boxes off shelves with fingertips. Nucleus built custom end effectors for that motion. The business model is robotics-as-a-service: the customer pays for completed physical work; Nucleus owns deployment, supervision, and the fleet. The company site’s line is “Making humanoid labor an industrial commodity, fast.”
The 2027 goal, stated in the launch coverage, is to run one of the world’s larger deployed humanoid fleets. Nucleus argues foundation models will get cheaper and that the moat will be long-tail factory data you cannot scrape.

A Human’s Take
Billing labor by the hour is the honest product. The G1 in a branded suit is not a new robot, and I do not care. I care whether those three weeks of remote supervision shrink, whether the custom fingertips survive a second customer, and whether the unnamed plant still wants the service when the novelty invoice arrives. If Nucleus can show cycle times and a second site without renaming the same pilot, this is the Tau-style story for factories. Until then it is a fast, supervised first shift.
