Samsung Held a Closed Humanoid Demo. The Photos Are Still Bot Handy.
Samsung Electronics ran a closed-door humanoid demonstration on August 10 at its Umyeon R&D campus in Seocho, Seoul, according to Seoul Economic Daily. Roh Tae-moon, who heads the Device eXperience division and oversees the new Robotics eXperience (RX) unit, attended in person.
The prototype itself is not in the photos. SEDAILY illustrated the story with Bot Handy, the household arm Samsung showed in 2022. That is the machine readers can actually see.
What sources say happened in the room
Industry sources told SEDAILY the unreleased humanoid handled precise finger work, including operating a camera to take photographs. The paper calls that a high-difficulty contact task: joints have to move finely while the force at the shutter stays under control.
Samsung has not posted official stills, a spec sheet, or a public video of that machine. Treat the camera claim as a sourced report, not a measured lab result.
TrendForce, citing ZDNet Korea, says Samsung has been building an in-house humanoid separate from Rainbow Robotics, already at an advanced stage, and that the company is adapting home-appliance motor tech into actuators. The same report says Samsung can pull factory data from appliances, phones, semiconductors, and displays, and that it has its own large language model, Samsung Gauss.
Samsung has not publicly confirmed the confidential in-house program, TechTimes notes.
RX first, then the factory
SEDAILY says foreign robotics hires recruited through the Future Robotics Initiative Group in March have started work at Umyeon, covering hands, manipulation AI, and walking/full-body control. Internal job-posting winners are expected to land in RX teams soon.
The commercial plan, as those sources describe it, is B2B first: run robots at Samsung affiliate plants, collect work data, check safety, then talk about consumer machines. Umyeon does R&D. The Gumi plant is the data side. TrendForce adds a planned Data Factory at Gumi that would fold existing process data into robot training.
SEDAILY also flags a group stack that is still a plan, not a shipped robot: Samsung Foundry for AI chips, Samsung SDI solid-state cells as a candidate battery, and fall smart glasses as a first-person video source for physical AI.
A Human’s Take
A camera shutter is a better receipt than another org-chart announcement. I want the next photo to be the August 10 machine, not Bot Handy in a living room. Until Samsung puts the prototype on a table, RX is a hiring story with one interesting task rumor attached.
