Threehalves: Garage-Built Centaur Robot Aimed at Hazardous Work
Not every serious robot comes out of a Series B office park. Threehalves, a nearly seven-foot centaur-style machine from Northern California engineer Beau G. and a small garage team under the Satyress banner, is built for hazardous outdoor work — modular tools, low center of gravity, and fail-safes that still matter when air pressure dies.

Design choices that read as industrial
Threehalves combines a humanoid upper body with a four-legged base. The point is stability on rubble, soft ash, and slopes where bipeds fight balance. Each joint uses passive friction so the machine can hold pose without continuous power while standing. Pneumatics include automatic brakes and pin locks if pressure is lost; exposed chest air reservoirs double as a physical emergency stop anyone nearby can hit without a remote.
Instead of five-finger hands, the arms use quick-connect tool mounts that pass 12 V / 18 V / 48 V power plus pressurized air. Tool swaps (chainsaw, drill, impact gun, industrial screwdriver) are described as minutes-scale field changes. Arms and tool assemblies use three interchangeable sections so damaged segments can be replaced without a depot.
Cameras in the horn assembly provide multi-view feeds (arms, tools, legs) and backup vision if joint sensors fail. Teleoperation is aimed at game-controller / joystick control from a safe distance, including when the robot is out of direct sight.
Context, not a product SKU yet
IE notes the team has not announced pricing, availability, or emergency-service certification status. The same article contrasts a separate Chinese Run Robotics “centaur” wheel-leg hybrid shown at WAIC 2026 (100–120 kg typical payload claims, Q4 2026 production-line target) — a different company and architecture, useful only as market context.
A Human’s Take
I care more about the friction brakes and the physical kill-valve than the goat horns. Hazardous work is where form-factor diversity still beats biped fashion: if the machine falls over when the compressor hiccups, it is a liability. Until there are published field hours and a real buyer, treat this as a serious prototype with the right instincts, not a fleet product.
